Material Gallery welcomes Taiwanese artist Lu Wei back to Utah for Ink Shadows, her second U.S. solo exhibition. This new body of work features ink paintings and Asian folding screens that explore the creative and spiritual dimensions of “shadows” through a cross-cultural lens. Lu Wei reinterprets archetypal female figures—often associated with darkness or negativity—transforming them into empowered and healing presences within her meditative compositions.
Lu Wei draws on literary, religious, and mythological symbolism to express themes of womanhood, motherhood, and cultural duality. Her distinctive approach blends traditional ink painting techniques with contemporary concerns around gender, identity, and representation. Ink Shadows continues the artist’s project of illuminating the marginalized or misunderstood through nuanced, multilayered works that invite reflection and reimagining.
