In I’d like to return this body, artist Holly Rios examines the visual legacy of the Playboy empire, using erasure and appropriated imagery to explore the cultural weight of beauty standards disseminated through the publication’s vast archive. By treating Playboy as a data set, Rios highlights the scale and patterns of representation that have shaped mainstream notions of desirability since the 1950s.
This compelling body of work interrogates the tension between reflection and reinforcement of the male gaze. Rios confronts viewers with the simultaneous disruption and complicity inherent in these portrayals, connecting sexualized imagery to systems of capitalism and technology. Through layered visual and textual elements, the exhibition reveals how bodies are commodified and how these frameworks subtly shape our understanding of self and others.
