Hikmet Sidney Loe is no fussy antiquarian excavating dusty artworks from musty cellars. Nor was her evident fascination with Robert Smithson and the Spiral Jetty what brought her here. Rather, her first-person discovery of the land beneath our feet led her to appreciate a fellow enthusiast for black rock, red water, long vistas, and short lifespans. Translating 40-year old notes or 40-million year old sediments into modern idioms is just part of an art historian and librarian’s self-invented task, as we discover in our preview of a lecture and forthcoming book recounting her discoveries.
