Governor’s Leadership Awards

In our upcoming edition of 15 Bytes, Stephen Goldsmith discusses the new City Creek development in Salt Lake City. Finding his name in print in 15 Bytes should be accolade enough, but he’ll also be pleased this week that Artspace, the non-profit he founded in 1987, will be recognized when Governor Gary R. Herbert presents the 2012 Governor’s Leadership in the Arts Awards.

The recipients for this year are:

Teri Orr has made Park City her home for the past 34 years and has been the director of the Park City Performing Arts Foundation for the past 18 years. Through her hard work and pioneering leadership, Teri has put Park City on the arts and culture map.

The City of Ogden , led by Mayor Mike Caldwell, nurtures a thriving community that serves as an arts junction — a place where a diverse population unites to create and celebrate the best in human expression.

Chris Roberts has been an educator for 34 years. He’s gained a reputation across the state as a regular classroom teacher who does amazing arts activities with his students, and he inspires other teachers to do the same.

Artspace founder Stephen Goldsmith’s dream of “artists as city-builders” laid the foundation for this group’s mission of creating affordable live/work space for artists and nonprofits. Current executive director Jessica Norie carries on this vision of revitalizing communities.

The 2012 Governor’s Leadership in the Arts Awards will be presented by Governor Herbert at a luncheon during the annual Mountain West Arts Conference on May 3, 2012, at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City . Reservations for the luncheon and registration for the conference are available online at artsandmuseums.utah.gov.

Also at the luncheon, Governor Herbert will be announcing the new Utah Poet Laureate as outgoing Utah Poet Laureate Katharine Coles completes her five-year term. Initiated in 1997, the Poet Laureate is a Governor-appointed advocate for literature and the arts throughout the state. Coles is a professor of creative writing at the University of Utah who was recently honored with a Guggenheim fellowship.
