Freedom of Expression: Artists Incarcerated at Salt Lake Community College

Salt Lake City
April 3 – May 23, 2025
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 3, 2025, 5–7 p.m.

This powerful exhibition features three mural-sized paintings created by young artists experiencing incarceration, in collaboration with local muralists. Developed through 10 workshops, the project provided space for the youth to express themselves, build creative skills, and work together toward a shared goal.

Organized by muralist Walton and SLCC criminal justice professor Dr. Anthony Nocella, the project brought together artists Walton, Beto Sanchez-Conejo, Chuck Landvatter, Matt Monsoon, Brooklyn Ottens, and Chris Peterson, with support from Salt Lake Valley Youth Center staff. The resulting works serve as vibrant, collaborative time capsules—visual expressions of hope, humor, and resilience.
