Dallin Orr, a Salt Lake City native, holds a Masters of Fine Art in illustration from the University of Hartford (2019) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Utah Valley University. With nearly a decade of international stained glass design & painting experience at Holdman Studios, he is continuing to pursue experimental and collaborative projects. In tandem, he engages in freelance illustration and pursues his own creative storytelling work. His oil paintings provide him with an essential creative foil to his love of storytelling. His work blends formal education with passion for life, navigating the convergence of tradition and innovation.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Being an extremely fortunate individual, I live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, Salt Lake City, Utah. Like others, the COVID global crisis brought me to a more introverted relationship with the world around me. I spent a lot of time with my own thoughts while experiencing the outdoors. Then, beginning in the autumn of 2022 and throughout the following year, the Salt Lake Valley experienced an exceptionally rainy period contrary to its dry reputation. The moisture began to (temporarily) calm the social panic of the drying of the Great Salt Lake. The monumental cloud formations and sunlight on mountainsides were so vibrant and breathtaking it was almost silly. Every day featured new momentous vistas. I couldn’t tell if the climate was going through some particular transformation or if it was just me changing. But, after being graced by this beauty during a time of uncertainty, I feel a burning urge to translate those sights and feelings into painting. I want to give back what I’ve received. With influence from turn of the century decorative artists like Édouard Vuillard, I want every inch of the canvas to be treated with care and devotion. I seek to bring my work to communities that foster beauty as goodness. Working as an illustrator and stained glass artist, this possession by my inner oil painter is both intimidating and enthralling. I am excited to see where this path takes me.
