Classic: Works of Art & Design Faculty, Past & Present at SUMA

Cedar City
Jan. 17 – March 4

Opening Reception: Friday, Jan. 20, 6 – 8 p.m.

Southern Utah Museum of Art

Behind every artist is a teacher who helped inspire them to create art, but how often do we see the art of the mentors? Every two years, SUMA exhibits the work of current faculty members of SUU’s Art and Design Department; however, this year will be a little different. In celebration of SUU’s 125th anniversary as an educational institution, this exhibition will also include artwork created by former faculty members from the last century.

SUMA’s collection includes many pieces created by former professors and this anniversary offers the perfect opportunity for them to be taken out and shown again. Some of the art that you can expect to see in this exhibition includes paintings by Mary L. Bastow, the founding chair of the art department at SUU, and watercolors by Thomas Leek, the founding director of the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery, SUMA’s predecessor, in addition to the recent works across various media created by current full-time faculty members in the Department of Art and Design.

“This exhibit allows community members and students to see the creative work of SUU’s professors,” SUU’s Art Department Chair, Jeffrey Hanson. “Art reflects the culture and times it was created in. This show is a visual dialog between our faculty, the community, and the students. Art is a vibrant, living, and exciting field. It’s important for the faculty to engage in the creative practice when they are teaching students how to become professional artists. It is equally important that viewers who attend the show engage in the intellectual ideas put forward through the variety of mediums they will encounter in the show.”

There will be an opening reception held on Friday, January 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery of the museum. During the reception, guests will have the chance to mingle and converse with some of the artists whose works are on display.
