Call for Choreographers

RDT’s REGALIA Choreography Competition – 2022

  • Submissions for the opportunity to compete for an RDT commission are being accepted.

  • Proposals will be accepted from choreographers working as professionals or pre-professionals ages 21 and up 

  • We are looking for choreographers who have a unique connection to Utah: training, birth place, current residence, have visited, feel a connection to Utah, its landscape, people, history, etc.

  • Four selected COMPETITORS will vie for the commission by creating a 5-7 minute work via Zoom. Selected competitors will have 4 hours of rehearsal on Sunday, February 6. Works will be filmed on stage after they have been created that same day. 

  •  The Regalia audience will award the RDT commission by voting onlnine February 27-March 4, and at an in-person celebration on March 5, 2022.

Submissions must include:

  • Full name, mailing address, and email contact
  • Links to samples of previous work on YouTube, Vimeo, etc. RDT will not view more than 10 mins total for any applicant
  • Current resume
  • Short written proposal (250 words):
    • Explain your current choreographic interests (dramatic, satire, abstract, humor, political, environmental, etc.), stylistic preferences, (traditional, contemporary, jazz, etc), and your choreographic process.
  • Short statement (100 words) about your connection to Utah

Each submission will be reviewed by Repertory Dance Theatre and 4 submissions will be selected to compete in the Regalia event.

An announcement of 4 selected submissions will be made on January 10, 2022.

REGALIA EVENT:
The four selected competitors will choreograph in two rounds on Sunday, February 6. Each choreographer will work with 8 dancers during 4 hours of rehearsal time to create a 5-7-minute piece. RDT will video the finished work that same day. The choreography and finished videos will be viewed online during a one-week period, February 27-March 5, 2022, when the audience will have an opportunity to vote and select the winner of the competition.

A culminating Regalia event will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022, when the results will be tallied and RDT will award a commission to be performed during Repertory Dance Theatre’s 2022-2023 season. Due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, in-person choreography is not possible. Additionally, choreographers are NOT expected to attend the event on March 5th, 2022.

The winner of the Regalia competition will:
Be awarded a commission of $3000 during the 2022-2023 season to create new choreography 8-10- mins in length featuring 4-8 dancers.
Choreographic/rehearsal time with RDT will not exceed 5 working days, 4 hours a day. Preferred rehearsal times: September 5-18 or October 10-November 6, 2022.
The premiere of the work will occur sometime during RDT’s 2022-2023 season.
Travel expenses will be negotiated. Choreographers with a connection to Utah are preferred for the project this season.
