Bryan Hutchison: Portrait of a Pear Tree at BDAC

Bountiful
January 14 – February 22, 2025

BDAC Underground Gallery
OPENING RECEPTION JAN. 17, 6PM – 8PM

Bryan Hutchison’s Portrait of a Pear Tree explores themes of sustenance, faith, and memory through an installation featuring 637 printed photographs of pears harvested from a single tree. The images, arranged in a striking floor-to-ceiling grid, reflect Hutchison’s connection to his family’s tradition of growing and preserving food. At the center of the exhibit, a table holds a bowl of dried pears, inviting viewers to engage with the work by tasting the fruit, symbolizing the interconnectedness of faith, nature, and daily life.

Hutchison’s artistic practice is deeply informed by literature and mathematical abstraction. This installation serves as a poetic meditation on the preciousness of mortality and humanity’s desire to preserve what is perishable, drawing from his upbringing immersed in scriptural parables and the cycles of the natural world.
