Bea Hurd: Root, Rot, Roast is a visceral exploration of identity, transformation, and liminal spaces. Using craft-based materials, the installation is presented as a stylized and somewhat grotesque self-portrait divided into three parts: the early self, the current self, and the internal self.
As a queer person raised in Utah, Hurd’s work reflects on the internal process of detachment from familiar roots while expressing a desire for separation and transformation. While looking forward to the transitions ahead, Root, Rot, Roast also delves into the sense of loss that accompanies change, particularly the ties to her queer students, whom she mentors and provides a safe space for in her classroom.
Hurd shares, “I feel focused on the limbo I exist in right now—knowing that leaving Utah is so close but still existing in my current reality. I have ravenous desire to learn and grow.”
This deeply personal installation is inspired by Julia Kristeva’s quote, “A person’s identity is formed not just through their roots but also through the journeys they undertake away from them.”
