Ava Anderton (b. 1999, Salt Lake City, UT) is an interdisciplinary artist studying Fine Arts at the University of Utah. She constructs sensorial and thought provoking experiences through sculptural and visual form, investigating how it feels to relate to a thing outside of ourselves. Observation and curiosity plays a large role in her work, being both the practice and the final work. She is currently working on a sculptural and image based body of work that considers the performance of viewing, and how we project meaning onto our environment. The state of both spectating and directing is explored throughout this practice, and the spaces in between.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“Floor Lamp” is an exploration of unusable & non-functional furniture. Or rather, finding function through the careful consideration of emotive and sensorial quality that an object posesses. This process was motivated by honoring the visual and tactile senses, while humorously constructing a floor lamp that is too tall to access without a step stool. It is through this obstacle that emerges the magic of transforming an object from a thing to a “being”, one with a presence and personality. This sculptural work is supported by a wooden armature and the organic, mysterious surface quality was achieved through playful mixed media experimentation.
