Atis Rezistans | Ghetto Biennale highlights the vibrant and powerful work of Atis Rezistans, a collective of majority-class Haitian artists from the Grand Rue neighborhood of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Working in challenging conditions, this dynamic community includes experienced sculptors, emerging painters, photographers, musicians, poets, and performers. Their art deeply engages with Haitian history, culture, and religion, emphasizing themes of resistance and resilience.
Since hosting the first Ghetto Biennale in 2009, Atis Rezistans has formed an international platform for collaborative artistic exchange, inviting artists from around the world to join their neighborhood in creating transcultural dialogues. Over the past 12 years, more than 300 international artists have participated, creating works that challenge the margins and centers of global art production.
This exhibition at UMOCA celebrates the rich heritage of Haitian art and the collaborative spirit of the Ghetto Biennale, while addressing the agency, influence, and radical lessons that Haitian culture offers in the 21st century.
