As you’ll see from the video below Zane Lancaster has a very understated presence. Put him on a stage with a mic and we don’t think he’ll do much for the audience at your local comedy club (even a very inebriated one). But Ruth Lubbers thinks the art he makes would kill. Lancaster joins five other artists this month in Art Access’ exhibit focusing on humor entitled We Are Amused (through April 15). Lancaster’s work features stick figures enacting, in a darkly comical way, the artist’s fears. Accentuating the uncomfortable often makes for good comedy and in Lancaster’s case also makes for good art. Though his past work has had a political bent it has also touched the comic nerve. In 2009 he did a series of oil paintings that concentrated on the uncomfortable gestures that bind people in power (think George W. Bush and Angela Merkle). In this interview, filmed in October 2009 as part of Artists of Utah’s 35 x 35 exhibit, Lancaster talks about his working method and why he’s attracted to those uncomfortable hugs and awkward handshakes.
