A native of Utah’s historic Spring City and raised by working artists, Adah Bennion’s life has always been grounded in the arts and creative process. She studied in Sendai, Japan and lived in New York City, where she enjoyed working as a professional barista at a number of the city’s most respected establishments. Returning to Utah in 2012, she was a dorm parent at Wasatch Academy, an international boarding school, where she discovered a passion for working with and teaching teenage girls outside of the traditional classroom setting. Her creative practice is focused primarily in photography, printmaking and mixed media. Bennion’s works have been exhibited at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, San Luis Obispo, Remarque Gallery, Albuquerque, Spring City Arts, Spring City, Utah Cultural Celebratory Center, Salt Lake City, Hub City Gallery, Mount Pleasant, Annex, Altspace, and Snow Art Gallery, Ephraim, and her mixed media piece, B, was recently included in the 2019 Utah Statewide Annual exhibition, Mixed Media and Works on Paper. She has won several artistic merit awards including Best of Show, Photography Merit Award, Printmaking Merit Award in the exhibition, Artists in Residence Works in Progress, and has self-published two expansive volumes of photographic work, Belongs in the Night, Vol. I & II. Bennion works as Gallery Manager at Granary Arts, a non-profit contemporary art space in Ephraim, Utah, and will receive her Associate of Fine Arts and Associate of Art from Snow College in spring of 2020. She shares a home in Spring City with her boyfriend, and dog, Wizard, where she enjoys spending time in her studio, practicing yoga, and gardening.
“The Right Ring For Her” explores the status of contemporary marriage and ritual, the social value bestowed on motherhood, and the experience of being an unmarried and childless female in her 30’s today. What are the pressures she experiences? What are her hopes and desires? What issues are most important to her and also to her partner of over a decade? The rite of union is examined, questioning how one genuinely symbolizes or defines a successful modern relationship. Though elements in marriage arrangements and the culture of union vary greatly among societies, nearly all are fixed by tradition and habit, leaving little room for alternate paths to be perceived as anything but deviant.
