It’s such a small world. In our March edition, we featured ceramic artists Karen and Paul Gladstone in a video piece that we put together because Clay Arts Utah’s Biomimicry opens at Art Access on March 15. It turns out that exhibit, curated by Heidi Moller Somsen and showcasing work inspired by nature, features work by two of our own 35×35 artists: Nolan Baumgarter and Dan Vu.

Baumgartner is a practicing studio potter whose work has been shown locally and nationally. He creates functional pieces with playful patterns and colors in the glaze. Dan Vu’s uses clay to express the importance of ecosystems. His works, which frequently have long spindly spines that appear to be growing organically from the ceramic vessels, bring to the exterior what is going on inside our food.

They aren’t they only 35×35 artists showing outside of Finch Lane Gallery this evening. Mary Toscano, whose drawing “What a Fucking Nuisance” can be seen at Finch Lane, is also showing at CUAC’s Cinematic. She is exhibiting a multi-media drawing that encourages viewers’ participation in progressing through a narrative using a slide projector to create an interactive drawing experience. She’ll be showing with Rosi Hayes, Justin Nelson-Carruth, John Bell, Jeff Larsen and Matt Glass (an alumnus of our 2009 35×35 exhibition).

And David Habben, whose crisp contour drawings at Finch Lane invite close inspection, is heading down to The Leonardo tonight to work on a collaborative project with Shawn Rossiter. He’ll be loosening up and going big as the two artists take turns tackling a nine-foot tall sheet of paper. You can catch the pair late, as The Leonardo stays open until 10 pm and access to the Residency at The Lab is free tonight. The new 15 Bytes t-shirts will also be available for purchase.

Biomimicry features work by 17 artists and opens on March 15 at Art Access, with a reception from 6-9pm. Their regular hours are Mon, Tues, and Fri from 9am to 5pm and Wed and Thurs from 10am to 6pm. They are located on 230 South 500 West, #125. The show will be up through April 12.
