PechaKucha rides again

PechaKucha Night is here again and will be held (again) at the State Room, 638 S. State St., on June 6. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door but there are rarely tickets left at the door unless you buy them from a scalper and then they are a lot more than $15 so you probably should go to thestateroomslc.com and buy yours now. They sell out fast. As we told you in detail in our February 2012 edition of 15 Bytes, this exhilarating event, which started at an architecture firm in Japan and now is held in cities around the globe, is based on a 20 x 20 format. Each of a diverse group of people is asked to give a presentation of 20 slides that are each shown for 20 seconds on a topic that interests him or her. It invariably will interest you, too, and if it doesn’t it’s over in six minutes and 40 seconds and you are on to something else. There’s no “next slide” or “go back one, please” at PechaKucha (roughly “chit chat” from the Japanese) Night. These stimulating evenings, held about three times a [...]

Where to Go to Hear and See

The librarian on the City Library’s fourth floor proffered a warning: there hadn’t been enough space to hang everything in the correct order. She referred to the thirteen poems by Lynn Kilpatrick and fifteen drawings by John Sproul that together comprise To Be Unnamed. Probably everyone has an opinion on which works of art look best next to each other, but the human ability to isolate a subject of attention makes many different arrangements possible—fortunately for those who must hang works chronologically in museums, or according to a spouse’s preference at home. In this unusual case, however, the poems belong to a cycle that determines their proper order, and each poem goes with a particular drawing, some of them quite large. To further complicate the problem, the gallery was scheduled, months ago, to be shared with another artist; it has two asymmetrical doors, and features remote display space on the outside walls as well as that within. When the three bodies of work arrived, there proved to be no entirely satisfactory way to fit everything in without rearranging the intended order. The damage is arguably minimal: many visitors will look at the drawings, scan a couple of poems, and leave [...]

J. Kirk Richards’ Cristo Series at the Utah Biennial

Mondo Utah, the inaugural Utah Biennial that opened at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art last week, is all about Utah’s traditional parallel types, says museum Senior Curator of Exhibitions Aaron Moulton — the distinctive genres like landscape or outsider art that interact to form the state’s cultural puzzle. This intersection of genres can create new hybrids, adding to the diversity of contemporary Utah’s artistic landscape. One prominent Utah artist doing just this is the inventive J. Kirk Richards, whose work is a hybrid of intersections, bringing together classical, modern and contemporary influences. In his wall installation “Untitled (Cristo Series),” part of a micro exhibit from the collection of the LDS church that resides within the larger biennial, the artist employs portraits that cross traditional representations of traditional subject matter with acute degrees of reductive minimalist abstraction. The installation is not simply a pastiche of scores of paintings, but rather a mélange of over 160 surprising portraits that even in their simplicity are recognizable as representing Jesus Christ. These are hung magnificently in wall collage format — only the larger have frames — and make the very best use of space with very little negative space within the mass assemblage.
